Nature-friendly Yangpyeong, with a population of 120,000, is a city of arts that boasts the highest per capita concentration of artists in South Korea. Since its opening on December 16, 2011, the Yangpyeong Art Museum has planned a variety of contemporary art exhibitions, attracting around 1.18 million visitors to date, and 200,000 in 2018 alone.

This achievement was made possible mainly due to the Museum’s unique operation strategy and the diverse high-quality exhibitions and educational programs it holds for the general public and the city’s residents. The Museum is the pride and joy of Yangpyeong and a cultural icon for its residents.

In 2019, the Museum is committed to securing a variety of contents and creating the Yangpyeong Culture Brand in response to the demands of the global era. To this end, our focus is on discovering and promoting artists from the region, who show planning capability, expertise, public interest and soundness to have exchange activities with domestic/overseas art communities on an equal footing, with the aim of making the arts in Yangpyeong as dynamic and significant as their mainstream peers.

In this regard, the museum is planning its first special exhibition of the year, titled 2019 Art Journey 1, From Picasso to Kim Whanki (World-renowned Prints of the 20th Century and Contemporary Prints of Korea) to raise interest in and understanding of art prints among citizens and local artists. In addition, the event aims to raise public awareness of prints, and to promote the diversity of printing arts so that arts and industry converge and emerge as a useful instrument of local culture.

For this exhibition, we intend to arrange prints by modern and contemporary global masters by period, and showcase the significance of prints in art history. The exhibition will consist of five different sections, starting from the basement.

The Basement will display different printing methods on a series of panels to help the viewer better understand the genre, and visitors will be able to try the printing materials and presses on display. The Slope Area displays flags that carry symbolism with globally famous artists printed on them, as well as videos of the works of the artists. Exhibition Hall 2 (2nd floor) will display the works of artists from the birth and formation period of contemporary prints in Korea, along with those of active contemporary artists. Exhibition Hall 3 (2nd floor) will feature world-acclaimed prints of the twentieth century. Major artists include Jesus-Rafael Soto, Venezuela’s representative installation artist, who was invited to the 1988 Seoul Olympic Park as a sculpture artist; Antoni Tapies, a Spanish painter whose works recall Oriental forms of beauty; Roy Lichtenstein, an American pop artist famous for Happy Tears; Kusama Yayoi, whom Japanese artists refer to as the “Picasso of Asia”; Victor Vasarely, a French artist credited as the father of the Op Art movement (characterized by dots and sides, colors and sides ); Bernard Buffet, a French painter who employs sharp knives to express figures; Cesar Baldaccini, a French sculptor of The Thumb, which is installed in the 1988 Olympic Park; Armand Fernandes, a French sculptor known for his cubist sculptures; Andy Warhol, an American artist and a leading figure of the 20th-century pop art movement who produced world-famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Mao Tse Tung; Joan Miro, whose works pursued transcending aesthetics of lines and colors with unaffected creativity, and others.Notably, Exhibition Hall 4 (2nd floor) is dedicated to works by Pablo Picasso. The space shows how Picasso, a versatile artist who produced works in diverse genres as well as fine art, was recognized by art lovers and how his prints earned ever greater acclaim as his work evolved.

The Yangpyeong Art Museum’s new special exhibition, 2019 Art Journey 1, Spring Project; From Picasso to Kim Whanki (World-renowned Prints of the 20th Century and Contemporary Prints of Korea), aims to introduce these artworks to Yangpyeong for the first time so as to allow local residents to understand the nature and diversity of prints and how they are utilized and shared within the public sphere. Moreover, the event is expected to increase public access to the printing arts in the industrial society, enhance the value of creative arts, and show that the mixture of artistry employing variety of techniques is the integer of contemporary arts. It is our sincere hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for children or teenagers who are starting a new school term to experience the fascinating world of print while allowing the general public to gain a broader appreciation of the wider art world.
