The 21c WATERCOLOR in Yangpyeong

July 24, 2020 - September 6, 2020 Yangpyeong Art Museum

As the new horizon of Korean contemporary watercolor in Yangpyeong of 2020, you can meet with the works by

watercolor artists in the glocal era and also artists in the early period of Korean watercolor,

in Yangpyeong Art Museum and Online Cyber Exhibition Space from July 24th to September 6th.

Yangpyeong Art Museum is holding the 21c WATERCOLOR Special Exhibition for the county residents who get tired of high-intensity social distancing continued from the beginning of this year because of the Corona 19. Leaving all the depression and frustration caused by shut down in the whole global village behind, the exhibition is open through offline at the art museum and online visual exhibition at the same time, so that the local residents could appreciate the exhibition anytime.

As the summer project, 21c WATERCOLOR Special Exhibition in 2020 Art Travel-2, this exhibition shows the activities in the beginning period of Korean watercolor, and also modern acceptance and diversity of Korean watercolor in the glocal era.

The exhibition works include the works by artists working from the introductory period of Korean watercolor, and works by artists contributing to establishing the identity of watercolor. Like this, those artists having influences on the growth period of watercolor have repetitively evolved by raising the level of current watercolor to the glocal culture.

The characteristics of this exhibition could be largely divided into two. One is the category showing the realistic formal beauty in which watercolor is expressed into pure aesthetics while the other one is the category that does not want to be locked in the realistic frame of watercolor. Those works have different themes in many spaces. The O2 SPACE on the ground floor shows the chronicle of watercolors of the century from the introductory period of Korean watercolor to the process of formation, and also provides the field experiential education to learn the basic practical process of watercolor. Installing visual media works informing that Yangpyeong is a clean region with clear water in the Slope Space, the media works converged with IT and art containing the time of life between Namhan River and Bukhan River, present the mysteriousness of nature in Yangpyeong.

The Exhibition Room1 in the 2nd floor exhibits the works by watercolor artists from seven Asian countries. As the works modernly containing the national/ethnic/religious social phenomena, the universal activities of watercolor seem to be equal with modern society.

The Exhibition Room2 in the 2nd floor presents the works by abstract artists who more actively reveal the acceptance of new methodology and modern media of Korean watercolor, which expands the width of thinking.

The Exhibition Room3 in the 2nd floor exhibits the works by artists who have shown the world of expression mixed with composition and abstract of watercolor theory of formative art in the period when the activities for seeking for the evolution of modern Korean watercolor are highlighted based on watercolor.

As the exhibition space for the first generation artists contributing to the development of Korean watercolor in the introductory/forming period of Korean watercolor, the Exhibition Room4 in the 2nd floor exhibits the works by artists showing the Korean-style formative beauty by realistically expressing objects to settle down Korean watercolor in the Japanese colonial era. The Exhibition Room5 in the 2nd floor is an independent exhibition space expressing the city of water, Yangpyeong into media drawings. Once watercolors are combined with media, the peak of a new visual art could be reached. In the works, the wavelength of water reminds us of such difficult environment in the introductory period of watercolor. Through the conversion of advanced IT and art, the art & culture in the future leading us to the wider world could be predicted.

Moreover, the Yangpyeong Art Museum is operating the creative art education for children in the combination of field education and online education. It is composed of total seven sessions once every week by inviting domestic excellent instructors. The participants could make their own unique creations by applying many techniques implying the importance of water and diversity of the world. During the exhibition period, various additional events are also performed as well. In order to prevent the spread of Corona 19 and also to protect the viewers, the fever test, wearing a mask, and epidemiological record would be thoroughly executed. For the smooth operation of the summer project, 21c WATERCOLOR Special Exhibition in 2020 Art Travel-2, the Yangpyeong Art Museum is more carefully getting prepared.
