See/saw: Between Symbol and Narrative

2024.03.15.- 05.06.

Seeing an artwork is more than just a cognitive state of the retina and brain; it is an act of trying to understand the world within it. We see the world from different angles through our personal experiences, perceptions, and expectations. What we have seen is the basis of our judgment through past experiences and knowledge, which is the basis for interpreting the world. What we see expands our world through our current experiences, and what we see also opens up space for our expectations and imagination of what we have not encountered before. Standing in front of a work of art, we encounter, feel, and interpret the world within it. In this context, this exhibition, composed of the gazes 'See' and 'Saw', explores the various parallaxes of art through two elements: symbols and narratives.

Artists use their own visual language to express not only the society we live in, but also the dimensions they encounter beyond their inner world. They hide deep thoughts and messages in various symbols such as color, form, and composition, or reveal the narrative of a scene and show it as it is. This exhibition presents works that reveal the narrative that unfolds over the artwork, the messages hidden within the symbolic representation, and the interplay between symbol and narrative. The artists urge us to look beyond the artwork, to see beyond the world we see with our own eyes. The world we encounter through them becomes a multidimensional exploration of the artist's world and the world of the individual.

"See/saw: Between Symbol and Narrative" invites artists and viewers to play seesaw together in the playground of art, freely moving up and down between symbol and narrative. Through this balance, artists and viewers understand each other and sometimes discover new dimensions that they didn't even know they had. Through this exhibition, we hope that artists and viewers will have the opportunity to see, understand, and connect with each other as well as contemporary society through art.
