Yangpyeong Art Museum celebrates the 10th anniversary of its opening, highlighting the contemporary art culture with a range of the media artists from Korea as well as abroad who have walked along with the history of the museum. The exhibition also offers post-media art fusing science and art such as AI, Media Art Installation, Media Facade, AR, VR, and 3D Mapping to strengthen the advanced central role of Yangpyeong Art Museum. Yangpyeong Art Museum has created a new art culture by introducing creative and well-known contemporary art under the theme of the local culture of Yangpyeong. It has placed special importance every winter on interdisciplinary art, fusing art and science, and presented a new approach and diverse artistic values through media art born from this fusion every winter.

This exhibition invites actively engaged artists from various regions of Korea and from overseas to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its opening, and the artists have prepared complex visual creations realizing their impressions of Yangpyeong Art Museum.

The exhibition starts with a story contemplating the word ‘highlight’ with the point of looking back at the last 10 years of Yangpyeong Art Museum and preparing for the evolving future. Highlight is a compound word meaning High-technology and Light including ambiguous expressions such as ‘the most shining moment’ and ‘light’s wavelength’ in the concept of media art. Moreover, highlight also has the meaning of inspecting the innovation process in beginning a new wave. Thus, it puts emphasis on providing an active will to take the leap forward as an evolved museum through light and the genre Media Art.

The exhibition is organized as three sections. The first introduces artists creating the light of hope through the recording and representation of highlights of every moment under the theme of ‘Highlight as Media Art’ in the integration of science and art. They embrace a new fusion including artists from different fields in the art world today where boundaries are collapsed while practicing the integration of science and art through the opening of new values and artistic activities in a new concept coping with the time, culture, and society, diversifying media and extending expression. The result of this integration, ‘highlight’, within the concept of media art includes its future-oriented meaning, increasing the level of art and culture both in Yangpyeong and in Korea with Yangpyeong Art Museum’s willingness to reach a new level, and the illusion of light created by the fusion of science and art.

The second presents ‘Recorded Highlights’ based on the 10-year records and memories of Yangpyeong Art Museum that have contributed to the residents and local community with the artists’ works. All art start from impressions. Observations, experiences, and specific feelings leave numerous traces and marks. Artists have continuously recorded those traces and marks in their creations in the form of exhibitions, and the local residents remember those records. Yangpyeong Art Museum recorded all these visual traces. Highlights recording the time, space, and memory of the museum’s attempts to prepare for the next 10 years - not with a view of the past but rather the future through the records of the museum in the artists’ creation.

The third section is about ‘Highlight as a space that turns into light’, referring to the meaning that a truthful moment highlighting us comes through the confrontation of art with everyday life, leading to a creative evolution. Living in the global cultural era we continuously attempt to suggest hope for the future by understanding the local culture in order to look for the essence and origin of the cultural environment. In this respect, Yangpyeong Art Museum discovers the self-sufficient driving force in each life of local residents and their every moment so that creative evolution is possible. Moreover, Yangpyeong Art Museum continuously creates the possibility of creating art in life, supporting the local community as a cultural phenomena with artworks and their progress with creativity, which includes the third artistic activity of enjoying them. Highlight intends to deliver the implied meanings of the museum’s role including its space, visitors, artists, and artworks, and expects to stimulate the five senses of visitors with media art in this era which has changed the manner of the relationship between objects and viewers, and with artwork composed of experimental elements using current technology.

Yangpyeong Art Museum has a strong will to improve its evolved role of discovering capable artists and opening a discussion of the trends of contemporary art by communicating with the world through light for the future.

1. From Memories_A New Point

Illusion of Light through the Fusion of Science and Art

The artists participating in the exhibitions use light to deliver their memories and impressions of the museum through the changes in its space. The museum has allowed visitors to have dreamlike and surrealistic experiences with today’s immersive media while immersing them in its spaces. The illusion of light resulting from the fusion of science and art is future-oriented, leading to a new view of the future from memories of the past while the rapidly changing times are revealed through the changes in the spaces using light. These changes surely give visitors an opportunity to feel the flow of time in actual life.

The participating artists have prepared a time travel of the last and next 10 years of Yangpyeong Art Museum. For this project they recorded and presented highlights of every moment to create the light of hope. They were engaged to create a new concept through the extension of their medium and its expression while researching and studying digital media to deliver their message in an understandable way to visitors. Media art applying technologies from the media to high-tech digital devices with the development of scientific technology is now a genre that cannot be apart from today’s society and art. It has extended its field and given artistic and aesthetic values, fusing with other genres and being applied closely around everyday modern life. This fantasy of light achieved from the fusion of science and art invites visitors in a more easy and approachable way to bring interest and enjoyment to art. Moreover, media technology has evolved into such approaches as kinetic art and interactive art, allowing visitors to have surrealistic and fantastic experiences with a new sense of space.

Creating a lively atmosphere and giving an opportunity to have a more direct experience of artwork for visitors, the exhibition expects to stimulate all the senses and arouse their sympathy with the artists who create media installations shining in their own space from the memory and impression on Yangpyeong with the history of Yangpyeong Art Museum over the last 10 years.

2. Recorded Memories

Time, Space, Memory - Recorded Highlights

The force for the growth of the museum came from the various artists working together over the last 10 years. The museum’s last 10 years had them as the driving force to root our art culture within the community and was about the continuous attempts to evolve and appreciate the artists and local residents through live interaction. The exhibition, , in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of its opening remembers the highlighted artists and artwork between yesterday and tomorrow while waiting to meet new highlights through the circular motion of this wave. Since the opening of ‘Magical Country, Yangpyeong’ on December 16, 2011, Yangpyeong Art Museum has held 73 exhibitions and recorded highlights of these moments with 1,723 artists. Like art and society that start from indefinite matter and progress into defined matter. Yangpyeong Art Museum has also established its history in time; it has remembered and recorded artists’ role in society, the future of society, and the process of its visualization for the last 10 years.

Artists continuously record their art creation through the medium of exhibition so as not to disappear, and the residents remember this record. And Yangpyeong Art Museum, in recording all these visualizations of traces, recognizes the last 10 years as a highlight itself while supporting art, society, and the local community without any rush. Highlight is recording the time, space, and memory and presents artworks based on the last 10 years, which can be seen as art commemorating the past, present, future, and as time travel as well as the result of all of them.

Yangpyeong Art Museum’s last 10 years do not simply represent the past or the flow of time. The last 10 years show the history and records for the coming 10 years. In this respect, Yangpyeong Art Museum attempts to talk about its records and history in order to prepare for the coming 10 years not from the viewpoint of the past but of the future. Visualizing the records of the last 10 years and the artists’ memories, Recorded highlights show unforgettable memories while taking a role for allowing the tomorrow. We take life from the point between yesterday and tomorrow. Thus, Highlights stands for life itself, and continues to be an entity that creates balance and harmony in society.

Yangpyeong Art Museum focuses on cultural communications that can be a way for artists, visitors and residents with the present wish that art becomes a cultural phenomena to bond the local community. Looking back at the last 10 years, Yangpyeong Art Museum marks a new start by recording the past not from a simple viewpoint but from the viewpoint of memory and history while building a relationship with the local artists with tenacity as well as flexibility, like a ginko tree lasting for one thousand years with its strong life force overcoming adversity. Thus, Yangpyeong Art Museum remembers and records the last 10 years in the viewpoint of ‘From Memories’ for the coming 10 years to celebrate the cooperation of time and art.

The past 10 years give birth to the coming 10 years from their memories. Those memories start to open the coming 10 years of Yangpyeong through its recorded history. This exhibition is a tribute to the last 10 years and Yangpyeong overcoming time with the numerous participating artists in Yangpyeong.

Yangpyeong Art Museum has kept memories and records as well as the aesthetics of art that establish them as history. As a result Yangpyeong has evolved with and communicated with locals in a nature that awakens artists’ genius and the local inherently artistic resources friendly with nature, people, and art in our time. Moreover, it has helped to establish a happy local community led by the locals with various exhibitions, education programs, and live activities to elevate the brand value of Yangpyeong and its possibilities. Everyone spends time to find the real meaning of life, build memories, and leave meaning. Those meanings gather to form a community from the outside and to create culture and art from the inside. There were fascinating moments at the time of Yangpyeong Art Museum’s establishment.
